Environmental Awareness & Community Action Project (EACAP): Partnership for Student & Community Engagement

The EACAP project involves teams of undergraduate students in an introductory environmental science course working collaboratively to research environmental issues, participate in community-based projects with more than a dozen partnering organizations (e.g. Berks Nature, local schools, etc.), and raise public awareness by showcasing and presenting their projects in multiple ways. Since 2011, more than 1,500 students have investigated numerous environmental topics and spent more than 12,000 hours contributing to community projects such as creating community rain gardens; developing signage, brochures, and education materials; cleaning up rivers and trails; helping with the redevelopment of urban school gardens and creating murals and classroom environmental stations; planting trees; and conducting water quality inventory. In a memorable experience during Fall 2022, Kazempour participated in an EDGE fellows program collaborating internationally with a business professor at Moscow State University and engaged students in both courses in the EACAP project and collaborative weekly virtual discussions and presentations.

Mahsa also directs the Student & Community Engagement Symposium at Berks Campus
